Today, Tuesday, February 25, coinciding with the 59th anniversary of the wreck of the Spanish Navy frigate "Ariete," the multipurpose ship "Carnota" remained docked in Brens Harbor, on an emotional day loaded with activities and commemorations.
The residents of Carnota and region had the opportunity to visit the interior of the ship "A 61 Carnota" and learn about the many missions it performs, including towing, maritime surveillance, logistical transport, support for other vessels and vertical refueling.
During the morning, guided tours were carried out with the students of the CEIPs of Carnota and O Pindo and the IES Lamas de Castelo. It was an educational and memorable experience for the students, who, in addition to visiting the interior of the ship, learned about the history of the wreck of the Ariete as well as the importance and connection, which for more than half a century, has maintained Carnota with the Spanish Navy.
The official visit began at 12:15 p.m. The event attended: María Rivas, deputy governor Juan Manuel Saborido, mayor of Carnota, deputy mayor of Carnota, Merche Noceda and councillor Juan Pérez, Margarita Lamela, mayor of Cee, Raúl González, mayor of Dumbría, Francisco Javier Domínguez, mayor of Corcubión. The Local Police Department also assisted. Former surviving veterans of the frigate Ariete also did not miss the event and as it could not be otherwise, he made an act of presence, Francisco Vilabrille Caamaño, resident of Carnota and member of the National Police Corps, who was the person who had the initiative to name said ship by the name of Carnota, as a tribute to this story between Carnota and the Spanish Armada.
The invited authorities resorted to the interior of the ship accompanied by the crew and heard the testimony of two of the survivors of the wreck of the Ariete who made special mention of the brave inhabitants of Lira, Lariño and Carnota who, in 1966, risked their lives to save that of the 168 men of the frigate "Ariete" in the midst of a brave storm, Action that was recognized with the title of Very Humanitarian and listed on the coat of arms of the City Council.
The mayor of Carnota took the opportunity to give Commander Fernando Mariño an image of the Virgin of Remedies to carry on the ship A61 Carnota as a symbol of protection. He also gifted Francisco Vilabrille, who devised this tribute in his day, with a piece of pottery from Carnota.
The Marine Commander also delivered a plaque with the shield of the ship A61 Carnota on the occasion of this first visit.
In the afternoon, from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the open day was held for the general public in which there was a large influx of people.
The visit of the A61 Carnota was a tribute to the shared history between the Navy and the
neighborhood of Carnota, further strengthening that unique and special bond.
