Carnota welcomed a group of 38 students from the UNED Senior program in A Coruña on Wednesday, accompanied by their coordinator and tutor, Luís Ángel Rodríguez Patiño, for a day dedicated to the history and heritage of the municipality.
The visit began in the parish of Lira, where the group was greeted by María Lago, Tourism Officer for the Carnota Town Hall. There, they received an introduction to the main heritage, monumental, and cultural assets of both the parish and the municipality as a whole.
Following this, the group traveled to the Caseta de Pepe do Cuco, one of the most unique ethnographic sites on the Costa da Morte. It is a former fisherman's hut that has been converted into a small interpretive center dedicated to local history.
The next stop was the granary of Lira, one of the most monumental in Galicia, built between 1779 and 1814 and linked to the Church of Santa María de Lira. It measures 36.5 meters in length and has 22 pairs of pillars.
The group also made a brief stop at the Recuncho de Castelao, a memorial site located on the main road in Lira. Here, a bust of the Galician writer and politician Alfonso Daniel Rodríguez Castelao is preserved, along with a historical photograph of the rally he held in the area—a vivid reminder of his connection to the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death).
The day concluded with a visit to the Town Hall, where the group was received by the mayor, Juan Manuel Saborido, who thanked the UNED Senior group from A Coruña for their visit.
